Candida Höfer's Historisch-Geographischer Schul-Atlas, C-print of a Florentine palazzo map room with central globe and wall maps

C-Print together with the book in a clamshell case // Candida Höfer selected the Historisch-Geographischer Schul-Atlas, edited by K. von Spruner in 1860, for the Edition Ex Libris. Known for her extensive travels, Höfer found this historic atlas, with its antique maps, an ideal match for her artwork. The photograph captures the quiet grandeur of a Florentine palazzo’s map room, featuring an imposing globe at the center and walls inlaid with detailed, historical maps. Her C-print highlights the textures and colors, preserving the intellectual aura of the space. This image, chosen as the cover, encapsulates Höfer’s fascination with places dedicated to knowledge and exploration, bridging past and present.

The Düsseldorf School of Photography refers to a group of photographers who studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf during the 1970s. The photographers focused on precise, methodical documentation of industrial structures, often using a detached and objective approach.
