acrylic on paper, mounted on canvas - ca 1980 // L'Attente by Bengt Lindström, created around 1980, is a vivid and expressive acrylic painting on paper mounted on canvas. The artwork features a bold palette of greens, blues, reds, and yellows that swirl and overlap, creating dynamic textures and movement. Lindström's characteristic brushstrokes are thick and gestural, lending the piece a sense of intensity and emotional depth. The central figure appears abstracted yet retains a discernible face and hands, seemingly caught in a moment of contemplation or waiting, as the title suggests. The heavy use of color and form embodies Lindström's unique expressionistic style, where human figures are imbued with a raw, almost primal energy. This work captures the essence of emotion through powerful color contrasts and fluid lines, reflecting Lindström’s fascination with the human psyche and primal states of being.

What is the CoBrA movement?
CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
