Ansel Adams is known for his distinctive photography style. Most of his body of work consists of landscapes depicting the American West, most notable images in and around Yosemite National Park, His career began with a childhood gift of a Brownie Box Camera. He later upgraded to a Korona View Camera which he used to take his famous photograph, Monolith, the Face of Half Dome.
During the 20th century, with the advent of color
photography, when most photographers were creating using pops of color, Adams’ work stands out due to his use of black and white film to create sharp yet multi-faceted images.
He founded a group f/64, a group of artists that embraced “Pure” photography. With a fellow photographer Fred Archer, he developed “The Zone System” which uses techniques of exposure and printing to explore the full tonal range of a photograph. During the 1920s, after experimenting with the current trends of soft focus and diffused light, Adams opted for a crisp, clear, highly technical style featuring landscapes of America.
