Lithograph in colors on wove paper - Signed and numbered in pencil // Alexander Calder's 'Clown' (1976) is a vibrant lithograph that captures the artist's playful exploration of shapes and colors. Rendered in bold primary hues of red, blue, yellow, and black, the composition features swirling patterns and concentric circles that evoke a sense of movement and whimsy. The central spiral and surrounding circular forms create a dynamic rhythm, reminiscent of a circus atmosphere and Calder's fascination with kinetic art. The abstracted geometric forms appear to pulse with energy, suggesting the lively spirit of a clown's performance. Printed on wove paper, this work is signed and numbered by Calder in an edition of 150, with additional artist's proofs. 'Clown' exemplifies Calder’s joyful approach to abstraction and his ability to convey motion through static images.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
