Alberto Giacometti La Mère de l’artiste assise III lithograph of seated woman drawn in sparse linear strokes on wide blank background.

Lithograph on BFK Rives paper Signed lower right 'Alberto Giacometti' and annotated 'H.C' lower left in pencil Published by Maeght, Paris. La Mère de l’artiste assise III by Alberto Giacometti, created in 1963, is a lithograph that distills the essence of human presence into a few deliberate, fragile lines. The image of the artist’s mother seated on a chair appears nearly spectral, rendered with Giacometti’s characteristic immediacy and introspective sensitivity. The vast negative space intensifies the sense of solitude and contemplation, anchoring the viewer’s gaze to the tenuous but poignant figure. Published by Maeght, Paris, this print belongs to an edition of 75 with additional H.C. (hors commerce) copies.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
