Wat is Art Brut?

Art Brut, een Franse term die Ruwe Kunst betekent, werd bedacht door Jean Dubuffet om kunst te beschrijven die buiten de conventionele academische traditie van de schone kunsten is gemaakt. Dubuffet gebruikte de term voor werken van autodidactische kunstenaars, waaronder geesteszieken, gevangenen en anderen aan de rand van de samenleving. Hij noemde het ook Outsider Art. Deze kunst wordt gekenmerkt door haar ruwe, ongeraffineerde aard, vaak zonder aandacht voor traditionele presentatie of nabootsing.
