Remarquable pour ses mobiles innovants (ainsi nommés par Marcel Duchamp pour décrire les premières œuvres mécanisées de Calder), Alexander Calder est un sculpteur renommé dont les œuvres d'art cinétique embrassent les éléments naturels et le hasard.
Parmi ses œuvres les plus célèbres figure le Cirque Calder, un cirque miniature fabriqué à partir de fil de fer, de tissu, de liège, de caoutchouc, de ficelle et de divers autres objets trouvés.
Le père de Calder était lui-même sculpteur, mais souhaitait vivement que son fils se forge une carrière dans un domaine autre que les arts. Calder a étudié l'ingénierie mécanique et excellait en mathématiques, mais malgré les souhaits de son père, Calder a néanmoins fait une incursion dans l'art et a utilisé son expérience de l'ingénierie comme base de son travail. En plus de ses petits mobiles, Calder a également créé un certain nombre de sculptures monumentales ; .125 à l'aéroport JFK, Trois Disques pour l'Expo 67 et Spirale de l'UNESCO sont quelques-unes des plus remarquables de ces œuvres de grande envergure.
