Stanley William Hayter is an English painter specializing in the use of printmaking mediums. He is most notable for his innovations with viscosity printing movement, which uses a process of laying oil-based inks of multiple colors on an intaglio plate. Hayter was an active painter in his time, participating heavily in the Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism movements. Aside from his major works in viscosity printing, Stanley William Hayter also dabbled with engraving, collage-making, drawing, and traditional painting. Many of his well-known images are known for presenting messages and central themes that were advanced for his time. Hayter founded the famous art studio, Atelier 17. It has since been renamed to Atelier Contrepoint, to honor him after his death. The studio became a popular and influential meeting place for other great artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Jackson Pollock, Alberto Giacometti, and many more. Stanley William Hayter will always be renown for his extreme flexibility across several mediums of paint and print media, as well as his ability to produce powerful images that were unprecedented for his time.
