Jun Morinaga is a Japanese photographer known for his black and white photos centered around water and waves. He began his career working as an assistant to American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith. In 1963 he was voted Japan’s New Photographer of the Year. His first collection, River, It’s Shadow of Shadows was photographed in the 1960s and published in 1978. Morinaga’s subject for this collection was a polluted river in Tokyo. Hauntingly beautiful, it is considered his most important work. One day in the 1970s, he visited the seaside intending to take some photos. As he sat gazing out at the sea, he became entranced by the waves. For the next 30 years Jun Morinaga would focus on capturing the movements of water. Jun Morinaga has participated in six joint exhibitions and one solo exhibition in places such as Berlin, Dublin, Tokyo, and New York City.
