collage with etching // The Oracle of Zeus by Joe Tilson, created in 1980, is an intricate collage and etching that combines natural and symbolic elements. The piece features a grid of lush green leaf prints, each subtly varied, arranged neatly across the page. At the top, a photograph of a hand placed on rough stone suggests a connection to nature and ancient rituals. Below, red geometric symbols evoke a mysterious script, perhaps hinting at divine messages or ancient languages associated with Zeus, the Greek god. This work, part of a limited edition of 75, reflects Tilson’s exploration of mythology, nature, and human interaction with the divine. Measuring 80.2 x 57.2 cm, the piece invites viewers to contemplate the symbolic resonance of natural forms and ancient beliefs.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
