Original serigraph on Lenox Museum Board. Numbered and stamped by the artist's estate. Rome Pays Off by Jean-Michel Basquiat, originally created in 1982 and reissued in 2004 as a limited edition serigraph, measures 111.7 x 101.6 cm. This work, printed on Lenox Museum Board in an edition of 85, encapsulates Basquiat's incisive commentary on capitalism, value, and identity. Bold phrases like MARKET VALUE, ESTIMATED VALUE, and GRAFT punctuate the yellow-dominated surface, alongside Basquiat’s iconic crown, skeletal figure, and graphic symbols. The interplay of raw linework, text, and stark color blocking reflects his spontaneous, graffiti-influenced style, transforming economic critique into visual poetry. The print is numbered and estate-stamped.

What is Figuration Libre?
Figuration Libre is an art movement that is equivalent to the French Bad Painting and Neo-Expressionism in Europe and America. The term was coined by Ben Vautier and the Fluxus movement. In 1981, Robert Combas, François Boisrond, Hervé Di Rosa, and Rémi Blanchard formed the Figuration Libre group. The term can be interpreted as free style art, emphasizing spontaneity, freedom, and a rejection of traditional artistic conventions.
