Etching with relief print. Signed on the front and numbered on the back. Narcissist Seeks Similar (Large) (2021) by Harland Miller transforms the format of a classic Penguin book cover into a large-scale etching with relief print. Dominated by vivid shades of pink, the work combines painterly texture with graphic typography, centering the tongue-in-cheek title in bold black letters. Below, a solitary penguin stands against a bright background, a nod to Penguin Books’ iconic logo. Miller’s satirical text, paired with the nostalgic design, reflects his ongoing exploration of literature, identity, and irony, inviting viewers to read the piece both as visual art and cultural commentary.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
