Alexander Calder Untitled color lithograph with abstract red, yellow, black, orange, and blue organic shapes on white background.

Color Lithograph on Arches. Signed and numbered. Untitled (1964) by Alexander Calder is a vibrant color lithograph that exemplifies the artist’s mastery of abstract composition. Executed in bold hues of black, red, yellow, orange, and blue, the print features biomorphic shapes and dynamic forms that float across a white field. The interplay of color and shape evokes motion and balance, hallmarks of Calder’s sculptural work translated into two-dimensional form. This lithograph is signed and numbered, and was printed on Arches paper in a limited edition of 100.

What is kinetic art?

Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
