Lithograph on paper // Spirale millepiedi by Alexander Calder, created in 1972, is a limited edition lithograph that embodies Calder’s iconic style of fluid movement and organic forms. Measuring 84 x 56.6 cm, the artwork features a large, bold spiral rendered in vivid red and yellow, encircled by a dynamic black outline. From the spiral, thin, black lines extend outward, each ending in a dot, resembling the legs of a centipede—hence the title millepiedi, meaning centipede in Italian. This composition captures a sense of kinetic energy, characteristic of Calder's work, as the spiral appears to expand outward. The simplicity of the forms contrasts with the complexity of movement they suggest, inviting viewers to experience the visual rhythm and spatial dynamics Calder masterfully creates.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
