Original etching on Richard de Bas paper - Published by Editions de L'Herne Paris - Suite: Santa Claus - Hand signed by the artist // Alexander Calder's Santa Claus III (1974) features a simple, yet evocative line drawing of three abstract figures, capturing a scene that oscillates between humor and mystery. Two figures, rendered in a skeletal, mask-like style, float above a pair of seated humanoid figures engaged in a lively interaction. With minimal details, Calder conveys expressive body language and facial expressions that seem to narrate an enigmatic dialogue or playful scene. The piece is part of the Santa Claus suite, created as an etching on Richard de Bas paper and published by Editions de L'Herne in Paris. This work is signed by Calder and produced in an edition of 175, measuring 20 1/2 x 26 3/4 inches. Calder’s use of simple lines to evoke complex interpretations is a testament to his unique artistic vision.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
