Lithograph in Colors on Rives BFK paper. Signed in pencil and numbered. Red Moon and Swirl (1965) by Alexander Calder is a color lithograph on Rives BFK paper that showcases the artist’s hallmark visual language of bold, flat shapes and primary colors. The composition balances dynamic red arcs and curves with bright yellow orbs, solid black forms, and a hypnotic black-and-white spiral. The title hints at the large red crescent dominating the scene, which seems to orbit within an abstract cosmic space. Calder’s playful arrangement of color and form creates a rhythmic, almost musical visual experience, reflecting his lifelong exploration of movement, balance, and harmony in both two- and three-dimensional work.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
