Lithograph in colors, on Arches paper, the full sheet - published by Maeght, Paris // Les Vagues #21 (The Waves) by Alexander Calder, a 1971 lithograph in colors on Arches paper, captures Calder’s signature style of vibrant, bold forms. Measuring 76.2 x 111.8 cm, this piece uses sweeping curves in red, blue, and yellow to evoke the rhythmic motion of waves. The artwork’s title reflects Calder’s intent to convey a sense of fluidity and dynamic movement. The solid, black-outlined shapes interlock and flow across the composition, creating a harmonious balance that mirrors the undulating motion of the ocean, a theme Calder often explored in his work.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
