Original lithograph on wove paper - Hand signed by the artist in pencil - Published by Alba Editions, New York. // Alexander Calder's 'Hommage à Man Ray' (1974) is a lively and symbolic lithograph that pays tribute to the artist Man Ray. Rendered in Calder's bold, expressive style, the piece features a playful composition with figures and shapes that evoke a sense of whimsy. At the center, a tree with exaggerated yellow sun-like forms appears to have two 'eyes,' radiating light. Below, a red figure and a smaller black figure stand, each distinct in character, while an animal—possibly a goat or mythical creature—completes the scene. Calder’s use of primary colors and strong lines reflects his unique approach to abstraction and personification. This lithograph, measuring 19 5/8 x 14 3/4 inches, is part of a limited edition of 100, hand-signed by the artist, making it a rare and meaningful homage to a fellow innovator in the modern art movement.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
