Digital print on Conqueror Vergé Pencil paper - Signed in pencil // Charles Baudelaire by Adrian Ghenie is a 2020 digital print that captures the essence of the renowned French poet through a collage of abstracted and fragmented imagery. The composition combines various textures, colors, and overlapping forms, creating a layered visual that suggests complexity and mystery. Ghenie uses distorted human features and surreal elements to evoke Baudelaire's exploration of the darker, more complex facets of human nature. The combination of rich browns, blacks, and reds hints at themes of decadence and introspection, which are central to Baudelaire's work. This piece offers a modern homage to the poet, merging historical portraiture with contemporary abstraction.

What is figurative art?

Sometimes known as Figurativism, figurative art refers to sculptures and paintings that are clearly or specifically derived from real objects, making them representational. The term figurative art is often used in contrast to abstract art. However, since the emergence of abstract art, figurative art has come to describe any form of modern art that has strong references to the real world or actual situations.
