Widely recognised for her pastoral, ethereal art, Mamma Anderson is a contemporary Swedish artist, inspired by her rural upbringing. Anderson’s most distinguishing trait throughout her work is arguably her incorporation of various other works by notable artists; Stairway to the Stars is perhaps her most notable work of this kind – the piece is comprised of an array of canvases, appearing to float upwards against a dark sky and mountains, and features works by Hopper, Monet, Gauguin and Manet. Anderson has cited John-Erik Franzen and Dick Bengtsson as major influences on her work, as well as her native roots – she stated: “My style follows a very Nordic painting tradition: landscapes, interiors, relationships, and dramas.” She is also particularly inspired by film and theater, often employing a stage-like setting for her works, a technique that she describes as ‘absurd’ but somehow still able to ‘buy into’.
