Untitled (Black Sand Box)

Joseph Cornell's Untitled (2C-38E), 1969 mixed media collage featuring a small bird image, green textures, and geometric shapes on a dark background.

Mixed Media Collage - Signed on reverse - Artist Estate Inventory #UC 17.1D // Untitled (2C-38E) by Joseph Cornell, created in 1969, is a mixed media collage that exemplifies the artist's fascination with mysticism, nature, and geometry. The composition features a central square panel with a carefully placed image of a small bird, juxtaposed against a rich green, textured background. Surrounding this square is a series of geometric forms and lines, including a red, almost architectural shape at the top and faint circular patterns at the bottom, adding a sense of order and structure to the piece. Cornell’s use of collage and mixed media, including found imagery, invites the viewer into a meditative and contemplative space. The work is characteristic of Cornell’s enigmatic and dreamlike visual language, blending the natural world with abstract forms. Signed on the reverse, this piece reflects Cornell’s unique ability to create worlds of wonder and introspection through a delicate interplay of imagery and abstraction.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
