Elke afbeelding biedt een uniek perspectief op deze monumentale installatie, van luchtfoto's en gedetailleerde opnames van de gedrapeerde stof tot scènes van de enorme menigten die bijeenkwamen om het evenement te aanschouwen. Het project veranderde het historische gebouw in een surrealistische, etherische structuur, gehuld in zilverkleurige stof die zijn architectonische identiteit wijzigde en de toeschouwers uitnodigde om het door een verbeeldende lens te zien. Gesigneerd door Christo en zijn fotograaf Wolfgang Volz, legt deze collectie de tijdelijke maar diepgaande impact van Christo’s werk vast, waarbij de kruising tussen kunst, architectuur en publieke betrokkenheid wordt belicht.

Javacheff Christo is het best bekend voor grote kunstprojecten waaronder het verpakken van lucht, het inpakken van gebouwen en het gebruik van natuurlijke landschapselementen. Christo begon zijn carrière als een sociaal-realistische schilder, na zijn studie aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Sofia. Daarna studeerde hij decorontwerp in Praag en beeldhouwkunst in Wenen. Na zijn verhuizing naar Parijs, waar hij zijn vrouw Jeanne-Claude ontmoette, begon hij samen met haar aan veel kunstprojecten. Javacheff Christo eerste solotentoonstelling vond plaats in Keulen in 1961 bij Galerie Haro Lauhus en, als protest over het bestaan van de Berlijnse Muur bouwde hij en zijn vrouw de Muur na met olie vaten (1962). Gedurende zijn tijd in Parijs begon hij ook te experimenteren met het verpakken van objecten. In het midden van de jaren ‘60 begon hij te werken aan grootschalige projecten, zoals mode-winkel etalages met afgeschermde ramen, en ontwikkelde hij het idee om de lucht te verpakken. In 1968 exposeerde hij een 5600 kubieke meter opgeblazen pakket op Documenta 4 in Kassel. In de late jaren ‘60 begon hij met gebouwen in te wikkelen, te beginnen met de Kunsthalle in Bern en later de Chicago Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst. Hij ging door met het inpakken van dingen in de omgeving, zoals een mijl van de Australische kust in de buurt van Sydney. In 1972 creëerde hij de Vallei Curtain als een tijdelijk kunstwerk in het landschap van Colorado en in 1976 ontwierp hij de Running Fence als een belangrijk stuk van de tijdelijke milieu-kunst in Californië. In 1995 kreeg zijn kunst brede aandacht over de hele wereld toen zijn Ingepakte Reichstag prominent in de media verscheen. Gedurende twee weken gingen miljoenen mensen naar Berlijn om het te bekijken. Dit stuk was symbolisch voor de hereniging van Duitsland, omdat Jeanne-Claude en Javacheff Christo het idee voor het eerst in 1971 hadden voorgesteld, en het project werd enkel mogelijk gemaakt toen de Berlijnse Muur twintig jaar later naar beneden kwam. Wat is Earth Art?
