Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase (2022) van Jaume Plensa is een minimalistische maar betekenisvolle reliëfdruk. Het toont het profiel van een kinderhoofd, opgebouwd uit een draadachtig raster dat zowel kwetsbaarheid als structuur oproept. Vanuit het achterhoofd buigt een lint met de inscriptie van het citaat omhoog: "Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase." Deze zin, toegeschreven aan Martin Luther King Jr., versterkt Plensa's onderzoek naar bewustzijn, geloof en onzichtbare structuren. Het werk nodigt uit tot reflectie over kwetsbaarheid en vertrouwen in het onbekende.

Wat is Locatie-specifieke kunst?

Site-specific kunst is een vorm van kunst die is gemaakt om op een specifieke locatie te bestaan, waarbij de kunstenaar de locatie als een essentieel onderdeel van het creatieve proces beschouwt. Robert Irwin was een belangrijke figuur in de promotie van deze kunstvorm in Californië. Site-specific kunst ontstond als een reactie op modernistische objecten, die vaak draagbaar, verhandelbaar en beperkt tot museale ruimtes waren. In tegenstelling daarmee is site-specific kunst onlosmakelijk verbonden met de locatie, en daagt het de traditionele opvattingen van kunst als een verplaatsbaar en verhandelbaar goed uit.
