Francis Bacon was een Ierse schilder die beroemd werd om zijn abstracte beeldtaal. Zijn schilderijen waren meestal figuratieve afbeeldingen geschilderd in de omgeving van de lege achtergronden of binnen geometrische kooien van staal of glas. Ze waren geschilderd met platte, monochrome kleurenpaletten. Francis Bacon maakte vaak een serie schilderijen die hetzelfde onderwerp afbeeldde over een periode van tijd. Dit was te danken aan zijn neiging om zich te concentreren op dezelfde thema's en variaties van introspectief, somber en existentiële thema's als zijn artistieke motieven. Misschien wel de meest beroemde werk van Francis Bacon is degene die hem zijn eerste succes bracht als kunstenaar. Zijn Drie studies voor figuren aan de basis van een kruisiging werd voor het eerst in 1945 tentoongesteld en velen waren van mening dat dit werk hem als echte kunstenaar plaatste. Hoewel de afbeeldingen in dit drieluik nauwelijks herkenbaar zijn als mens, drukken zij niettemin een grimmige en ruwe uiting van negatieve lichamelijke energie uit. Een ander opmerkelijk schilderij is Studie na Portret Velazquez van Paus Innocentius X uit 1953. Journalist Wyndham Lewis schreef dat Francis Bacon als kunstenaar "verbazingwekkend sinister" was. Omdat Bacon's roem als kunstenaar tijdens de post-Tweede Wereldoorlog plaatsvond, waren veel critici van mening dat zijn kunst een weerspiegeling en vertegenwoordiging was van de brutaliteit die hij had ervaren tijdens die jaren en de ontbering van de jaren daarvoor. Om verwarring te voorkomen, is het belangrijk op te merken dat Francis Bacon’s vader verondersteld wordt een directe afstammeling van de oudere broer van Sir Francis Bacon te zijn. Dit zou de gedeelde naam kunnen verklaren. In zijn latere jaren schilderde Francis Bacon veel portretten van zijn metgezel George Dyer. Bacons Triptych Black bevat scènes van de momenten vlak voor en na Dyer's zelfmoord. De schilderijen worden omschreven als "brutale voorstellingen” van deze tragische gebeurtenis in het leven van Bacon, maar het werk wordt ook beschouwd als een van de grootste meesterwerken van Bacon. Wat is Nieuwe figuratie?
