Karel Appel

Karel Appel (Pays-Bas, 1921–2006) fut cofondateur du mouvement CoBrA, célèbre pour ses peintures et sculptures expressives et colorées. Inspiré par la spontanéité enfantine et l’émotion brute, Appel utilisait des coups de pinceau audacieux et des couleurs vives pour défier les formes d’art conventionnelles. Ses œuvres, reconnues dans le monde entier, témoignent de sa foi en la puissance primitive de la créativité et de l’imagination.

Karel Appel a étudié à l'Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts d'Amsterdam. Sa première exposition personnelle a eu lieu en 1946 à Groningen. Dans les années qui ont suivi la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, il a développé son propre style artistique, en utilisant des objets et des morceaux de bois trouvés dans les assemblages et d'autres œuvres d'art. Ses premiers thèmes ont été associés à l'imagerie de l'enfance, souvent avec des humains grotesques, des monstres et des formes animales. Il était l'un des fondateurs du groupe expérimental hollandais en 1948, avec Guillaume Corneille et Constant Nieuwenhuys. Les trois artistes ont quitté Amsterdam et ont déménagé à Paris, où ils ont rejoint des artistes belges et danois pour former le groupe d'art international de Cobra.

En 1949, il a créé une fresque pour une cafétéria située dans l'Hôtel de Ville à Amsterdam, mais la désapprobation du public a fait qu'elle soit recouverte par du blanchissage à la chaux pour les dix prochaines années. En 1954, il a reçu le prix UNESCO à la Biennale de Venise. Dans la même année, plusieurs œuvres de Karel Appel ont été exposées à la Galerie Martha Jackson à New York. À la fin des années 1950, il peint une série de portraits de musiciens de jazz américains et en 1960, il a reçu le Prix International de Guggenheim pour son art. Plus de deux décennies, il a peint des peintures murales pour des projets architecturaux et créé des œuvres d'art publiques dans une large gamme de supports, y compris les carreaux de céramique, le marbre, le verre et le béton. À la fin des années 1960, il a commencé à créer des sculptures à partir de couches de polystyrène recouvertes de contreplaqué et de la peinture. Il a ensuite utilisé de l'aluminium, de la mousse plastique et du polyuréthane sculpté, qu'il a peint pour ressembler à du marbre massif ou du bois. Depuis les années 1980, jusqu'à sa mort en 2006, il a créé de nombreuses peintures relatives aux thèmes de la nature morte, des paysages et des figures humaines. Les thèmes de ces peintures ont été formés à partir de l'utilisation libre de la couleur et des coups de pinceau, sans la discipline du dessin. (Artist website)
