Nancy Spero

Nancy Spero was an American born artist who used her talents in the artistic world to speak out publicly against things like abuse of power, male domination and more. She often drew ideas for her work from current political happenings and notable historical events, often focusing on the women in each case. She is considered a pioneer in feministic art. She made political statements on behalf of women towards equality. Nancy Spero tried to radiate equality and tolerance throughout most of her work. Spero worked her forms in such a way in her art as to not create a hierarchy of any sort in her work. She wanted her work to speak to people in such a way that society itself would begin to change to equality and tolerance and thereby the things from which she drew her ideas, like the holocaust, the Vietnam War would no longer exist in this world. Nancy Spero was unapologetic in her depiction of western domination and the abuse of power. Nancy Spero worked in a variety of mediums from oil painting to drawings to cutting and stamping. As her topics evolved and she became more outspoken against abuses towards women, power and western domination, so her mediums evolved as well.
