Francis Newton Souza was a leading figure in the avant-garde movement and one of the first painters from India to achieve international recognition. His work was inspired from Expressionism and Art Brut, after he spent many years abroad. Souza's work was known for the aggressive lines and deep application of color, as well as depicting defiance with everyday life.

Francis Newton Souza’s favorite subjects included human figures engaging in erotic acts and organized rituals of religion. Through this, he still managed to magnify fine detail. Francis Newton Souza was known as an articulate genius, having the remarkable ability to translate disturbing and thought-provoking images into beauty. FN Souza was one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay in 1947. As India's first modern artist, it was his final wish that a permanent museum housing all of his works be created in India. (Artist website)
